Despite not being a basketball fan, I found myself in a position of leading the NBA’s official online business in the Middle East. The challenge was to understand the game and its passionate fans to create successful strategies and attract buyers. This new role allowed me to dive into the world of basketball and discover its allure from a unique perspective.
While immersing myself in articles about NBA teams and players’ history, I stumbled upon two incredible movies: “Air,” a miraculous tale of Michael Jordan (which I plan to cover in a separate article), and “Underrated,” the recent Apple Originals documentary.
“Underrated” narrates the extraordinary journey of NBA legend Stephen Curry. Unlike a typical cinematic movie, this documentary exudes raw emotions, making it an authentic and captivating experience. Among the countless true stories of exceptional players throughout history, Curry’s story stands out for me due to the remarkable qualities he embodies: perseverance, mentality, intelligence, and vision.
Perseverance: Stephen Curry defied the typical physical requirements of an NBA player, yet he refused to let that deter him from pursuing his passion. Despite facing jokes and skepticism from teammates and fans alike, he not only held his ground but ingeniously transformed his so-called weaknesses into strengths. Emphasizing his speed, flexibility, and deadly accurate long 3-point shots, he crafted a playing style that set him apart and showcased his extraordinary intelligence on the court.
Intelligence: Embracing his slight build, Curry used it to his advantage, becoming lightning-fast, nimble, and sharp in his signature 3-point shots, securing his position as a record-breaker for 3-pointers in NBA history. Beyond that, his strategic brilliance on the court also led him to become a champion for four titles with the Golden State Warriors, solidifying his legacy as one of the game’s greatest players.
Mentality: Curry’s decision to join the NBA after three successful years with the Davidson Wildcats basketball team reveals his strong mentality. Although he knew he had achieved greatness with Davidson, he remained loyal to his college team and his mentor, Coach Bob McKillop. In my opinion, mentality is the most crucial skill that successful people possess. It acts as the steering of your ride, allowing you to maturely take the right decisions and make precise moves. It gives you the knowledge of what, when, where, and how to navigate the path to greatness.
Vision: Curry’s vision translated into history, but I must credit Bob McKillop for his foresight and belief in Curry. Bob saw something in Curry that others didn’t, as he chose him despite rejections from other university teams. Even when Curry had weak performances in initial matches, Bob persisted in giving him opportunities. Such visionary people who see beyond walls are rare and admirable. As I always say,
“Vision is a gift from God; it unites your senses and insightful mind, allowing you to see tomorrow from today.”

Thanks to Bob’s guidance and inspiration, Curry was able to develop into the legendary NBA player we admire today. Bob’s vision and belief in Curry’s potential helped unlock greatness and forever changed the course of basketball history. This powerful bond between mentor and mentee reminds us of the profound impact visionary people can have on others’ lives and the world as a whole.
Remember, being underrated is a hidden strength! It’s a driving force that fuels your passion to prove yourself and soar to new heights. Avoid the allure of overrated praise; it’s like an empty balloon inflated with air that can be exploded with a pin! Stay grounded in your authenticity and let your genuine achievements speak louder than hollow accolades.
