Count Your Blessings

“The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith, is a personal favorite of mine. For those unfamiliar with the film, it’s based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a homeless salesman who puts his entire life savings into portable bone-density scanners. Although he manages to sell most of them, there’s a frustrating gap between his sales and the growing financial pressures, leading to tension with his wife, Linda, who works as a hotel maid. Chris’s life takes a turn when he meets Jay Twistle, a partner at Dean Witter Reynolds, during an encounter while trying to sell a scanner. Impressively, Chris solves a Rubik’s Cube during a taxi ride, catching Jay’s attention. This newfound connection eventually opens the door for Chris to become an intern stockbroker.”

In the remarkable journey of Chris Gardner’s life, there are countless events worth discussing, but today, I want to shine a light on a particular scene that holds profound meaning for anyone who has weathered life’s storms. However, before we dive into that pivotal moment, let’s rewind the clock for a bit.

Picture this: the day before his crucial job interview, Chris reluctantly agrees to paint his apartment in a desperate bid to delay eviction, a consequence of struggling to make ends meet. As he meticulously applies paint to the walls, an unexpected knock on the door heralds the arrival of two policemen. Their message is unwelcome – Chris is burdened with unpaid parking tickets, and they escort him to the police station. Instead of preparing for his interview, Chris finds himself spending the night in jail, a twist of fate that threatens to derail his meticulously laid plans. Yet, undeterred, he arrives at Dean Witter’s office the next day, donned in shabby, paint-splattered attire but punctual.

It’s in this very interview that a moment of magic occurs, encapsulating resilience and optimism in the face of adversity. One of the interviewers poses a thought-provoking question: “What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him?” Chris responds with a quip, “He must have had on some really nice pants!” At first glance, it’s a clever and logical response, but its significance runs deeper.

This exchange isn’t just about wit; it’s about belief. Some individuals possess the gift of foresight, their predictions rooted in logical equations of inputs and outputs. Yet, there’s another dimension to this – kindness and support. Life is an undulating journey, filled with peaks and valleys. No one remains perpetually happy or sad. In those moments of despair, encountering someone who stands by you, and who believes in you when you’re at your lowest, is a profound blessing.

Despite facing dire circumstances, Chris maintained an unwavering optimism, focusing on what he had rather than dwelling on losses. For instance, he viewed the gift of having a son as a blessing, not merely a heavy responsibility, even when his wife abandoned them. When he found himself sleeping in public restrooms, he saw them as sheltered places to rest, not as wretched accommodations. Undoubtedly, he felt the weight of his struggles, but he clung to optimism and persevered until he succeeded. The truth is, even in the midst of adversity, we’re adrift on a sea of blessings; all we need to do is count them.
