In the past decades, media was tightly controlled by big organizations and governments with only a handful of local and satellite TV channels. However, the internet and social media revolutionized content creation, giving individuals the power to produce and share content that consumes billions of hours daily. The availability of information, knowledge, and shared experiences is undeniably positive, but it can also be a double-edged sword.
While freely accessible content can be incredibly beneficial, it can also become a weapon if it’s useless and wastes your precious time. The real problem lies in the viral spread of bad content or negative news, which can severely impact your mood and mental health. In the past, young people in my age weren’t exposed to distressing news as they are now, with headlines and grim stories constantly appearing in their social media feeds, disrupting their peace of mind.
A few months ago, I experienced something entirely new to me – a panic attack. At that time, I had little knowledge about panic attacks, and the experience was overwhelming. I made impulsive decisions in an attempt to handle it, only making matters worse. It all began with a shocking headline about an Egyptian young man who passed away suddenly that deeply affected me, though I couldn’t understand why!? maybe because he had a similar lifestyle to mine, or things were going on with him.
Soon, my social media was flooded with discussions about the topic and even information about heart attacks and its symptoms … etc. This triggered weeks of panic until I finally grasped the situation and took steps to heal. Since then, I deactivated most of my social media accounts and unfollowed anyone or any content that disturbed my inner peace.
What I want to emphasize is this: your peace, energy, and mental health are the most valuable assets you possess. Guard them fiercely and be cautious of the people and content that may disrupt your well-being. Take the time to invest in yourself positively – indulge in a funny movie or educational content that enriches your mind and soul. Focus on what truly matters and choose the path that leads to a fulfilling and balanced life.
Balancing your work, studies, and family life is undoubtedly the key to a fulfilling existence. While I would suggest spending less time on the Internet, I won’t do so because, truthfully, the Internet is a treasure trove of opportunities when used wisely. For me, it’s my home, my work, and an integral part of my life. However, mastering the art of time management is crucial in making the most of this digital world.
Stay Safe!
